G. STREAMLINING YOUR BUSINESS. As companies grow, "islands of data"
form in business systems (such as Cat's Pajamas, S3-CISPUB, iPUB, etc.),

same information is in your Web site, business system, and sent to your
trading partners (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ingram, etc.). A cost-effective
EDI service can plug in, too, all of which decreases costs and increases
revenue by reducing errors and handling the information once. See BZNucleus:

eBOOKS – FINALLY
2003 may go down as the year of the eBook. I have been talking about
electronic books for some ten years—since a presentation in Tucson in
the early 90s. Many people expected the eBook to take off toward the end
of the 90s. Some publishers invested a lot of money trying to catch up.
The hype did not make the conversion happen
Now the times are different. The infrastructure is in place and economics
dictate a better way to disseminate information (nonfiction) and entertainment
(fiction). Amazon, B&N and others are making eBooks available for
download. The Internet makes dissemination of eBooks fast and easy. See
the URLs listed below to understand the eBook dissemination infrastructure.
The major driving force behind the eBook revolution is economics. It
costs too much to cut down trees, make paper, print books, ship them to
stores and advertise to get customers in to the stores. Costs increase
when unsold books are returned for pulping.
How are eBooks selling? Last year, the sales were up 1,442%. But how
did they sell against traditional paper books? We need numbers to compare.
Until a lot of books are offered side-by-side in several formats (editions),
we will not know. For example, see Dreamcatcher by Stephen King at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0743211383/
Stephen King wrote the book once and it is being sold in seven different
formats. Imagine seeing your books offered at Amazon.com in several different
editions.
FOR A LIST OF CONTENT CONVERSION PROVIDERS, see
http://www.microsoft.com/reader/partners/conversionproviders.asp
Some of the larger publishers are charging near full price for eBooks—presumably
so as not to cannibalize sales of their pBooks. Then after a few moths,
they lower the price to a more reasonable amount, often $7.99.
Microsoft about to push eBooks. It is reported that their research shows
that when people give eBooks a try they like the experience. Microsoft
is betting on eBooks to help grow the industry.
Microsoft recently announced a summer free eBook promotion for users
of its Microsoft Reader software. The 20-week promotion will feature three
new titles each week, including works such as "A Short History of
Nearly Everything," by Bill Bryson; "The Joy Luck Club,"
by Amy Tan and "Fear Itself," by Walter Mosley. The company
will require that users upgrade (no charge) to version 2.0 of its Microsoft
Reader software to take advantage of the offer. Microsoft also says that
it partnered with Fictionwise to begin offering a weekly eBook newsletter.

Business travelers like to use hand-held readers such as the Palm and
the Pocket PC. These devices can store a calendar, address book, audio
files (music) and hundreds of books. Palm devices are lower-weight and
lower-volume than printed books (pBooks). When businesspeople begin flying
again, eBook use will take off with them.
My new i700 from Samsung/Verizon has all the above features plus it is
a cell phone with 1xRT cellular service (up to 144 kbps). Now I can also
do my email research the Web wirelessly from nearly anywhere. Any email
I can do on the road is not waiting for me when I (briefly) return home.
At the BEA book fair in Los Angeles, a number of the hand-held computer
hardware and software providers joined in a special exhibit. Many people
toured every booth.
Next year, publishers exhibiting at the BEA should provide advanced reading
copies of their eBooks just as they currently offer forthcoming pBooks.
Fair visitors should be encouraged to bring their hand-held computers
to download books on site. Publishers should also distribute books on
CD for those who have forgotten their Palms/Pocket PCs.
EBOOK READERS (hardware) provide info-to-go: they make the electronic
information portable. You can make your entire book available for eBooks
in PDF and other formats. Here are the major players. See their Web sites
for details.

not to sell the eBooks directly but to use dealers such as those below.

“Today there are only two types of publishers: those in danger of missing
the electronic boat and those who do not even know there is a boat to
catch.”
ePROMOTION. eBook galleys and review copies can be sent to literary reviewers
electronically. A much less expensive alternative to printing and Postal
delivery. eBooks may be posted on web sites for the reviewers and email
notifications can be sent directing them to the page on the site.
Authors still need a pBook for credibility. A printed book is perceived
as more authoritative than an eBook. Once the pBook is completed, making
an eBook is easy and inexpensive. The eBook is frosting-on-the-cake revenue.
It is "found money". Eventually, most books will be published
as eBooks first; pBooks will not be printed until there is a demonstrated
demand.
We may look back in a few years to remember that eBooks reached critical
mass or the Tipping Point in 2003.

B. THE REFERENCE LIBRARIAN FILE. Following are some real and imagined
responses of reference librarians to patron queries that I picked up on
a ref librarian listserve.
--Lee Xavier, editor-in-chief, Anvil Publishers, http://www.anvilpub.com
REAL QUESTIONS, REAL ANSWERS
Caller: I have a painting by Vincent Van Gogh. It's all blue with swirly
stars on it. Can you tell me where I can get it appraised?
Reference Librarian: Sir, does it say '"Metropolitan Museum of Art"
on the bottom?
Caller: Yes.
Reference Librarian: Well, what you have there is a poster that is sold
in the museum's gift shop. I think they're about $10.00.
Student patron: I have to write a two-page paper on the Civil War. Can
you help?
Reference Librarian: What aspect of the war interests you?
Patron: What aspect? You mean I have to choose something in particular?
I thought I'd just write about the whole thing.
Student patron: Do you have any copies of newspapers published on the
day after Jesus was born? I need to see how the event was covered.
Patron: I need to find out who was elected President in the past ten
years.
Reference Librarian: Here's the World Almanac. See, it lists election
results in 1992, 1996, and so on.
Patron: Well, what about 1993, 1994, 1995, etc.?
Patron: I need to get books for my son's assignment on the invention
of television. Do you have a book on the inventor? I know it was Mr.
Sony, if you can just tell me where the biographies are.
