A. BOOKPEOPLE REORGANIZES. Hit by the reduction in independent bookstores
and by the decline of the economy, this long-time, employee-owned wholesaler
is in debt. Through financial advisor Stephen Kerr, Bookpeople is asking vendor-publishers to accept 50% of amount
of their invoices in order for the wholesaler to qualify for new financing.
Fmi, Kerr can be reached at 888-615-9727 and 760-521-7781.
B. POTTER BOOK BREAKS RECORDS: SELLS FIVE MILLION COPIES ON FIRST DAY.
The fifth volume of J.K. Rowling's best-selling Harry Potter series, "Harry
Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", may go down in
history as the book that sold the most copies in the shortest period of
time.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Barnes & Noble chain sold
one million books within 48 hours. General manager Steve Riggio,
called it the most successful sales day in the history of publishing.
Amazon.com Inc had already received a million orders for the book worldwide,
making it Amazon's most successful sale. Bill Car, head of Amazon's US
music, books, video and DVD section, has called Harry Potter "the
biggest new-product-event in the history of e-commerce."
C. MICROSOFT ABOUT TO PUSH eBOOKS. It is reported
that their research shows that when people give eBooks a try they like the experience. Microsoft is betting
on ebooks to help grow the industry.
D. BOOKSELLERS REACT TO CHAIN PUBLISHING. The lead article in a recent
Wall Street Journal notes that Barnes & Noble has just published its
own versions of The Scarlet Letter, Great Expectations, and Moby Dick.
Just as supermarkets now sell their own brands along side name brands,
so Barnes & Noble is creating a store brand of books: "cheap
editions of nice works where price matters more than name."
The paper reports that at $3.95, the B&N version of The Scarlet Letter
is $2 cheaper than Bertlesmann's Modern Library
version. Because B&N keeps all the profit on sales of these books,
they have decided to load up the front of their stores with its own low-cost
titles, consigning all other publishers to the back.
In the world of book buying, which depends heavily on impulse purchases,
this is a huge advantage. While the paper notes that Barnes & Noble
is doing this as a partial answer to Amazon.com and Wal-Mart, it also
points out that other companies have fallen on
their face when trying to compete against the people they do business
with.

Is she a credible person? No one ever asks, “who

F. SOME EMAIL HEADERS PROMPT DELETION. Spam is so overwhelming and frustrating
that many people delete anything that appears to be spam without reading
or even checking it closely. If your subject line states U>RGENT! or
uses words such as M>ortgage, b>usiness proposal,
p>rescriptions or w>ebcam,
many recipients will delete it without further inspection. It is best
to avoid using certain words in the Subject line.

ParaThoughts
CROSS-GRAIN BOOKS
Paper has a grain just like wood. Both cover and text grain should be
vertical. If the grain runs left to right, the book will have a stiff
feel; it is said to "snap shut". The printing press for 8.5
x 11 books should not be used for 5.5 x 8.5 books and vice-versa.
Book printers rarely make the error of printing cross-grain; they know
better. Improper manufacture usually occurs at job printing companies.
The look and feel of a book contribute to the
acceptance of its content. Make sure you are getting the best possible
manufacture. Deal with a "book printer". For a list of book
manufacturers, see The Self-Publishing Manual and http://parapub.com/supplier.cfm
