ParaTips

A. Get your cover image on Amazon.com faster. If you send your cover for scanning or if you send the image file on a disk, it will take weeks to post the image of your book cover. If you FTP it, the image is often posted overnight.

To FTP, you may get software such as CuteFTP or go through AOL. Here are the AOL instructions:
Log on.
In the open bar at the top, type FTP and click on Go.
Click on Go to FTP. Click on Other Site.
In the Site Address bar, type FTP-1.Amazon.com. Check Ask for Login Name and Password. Click Connect.
In the Please Enter Your Login Name bar, type catalog. In the Please Enter Your Password bar, type muchstuff. Click Continue.
That should get you in. You will see a lot of other JPG files that other people have uploaded.
Click on upload and enter a JPG, 72 dpi image file directory and name.

Note that Amazon wants your cover to be identified by its ISBN. See
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/partners/publishers/catalog-guide.html

B. Book marketing tip. Not everyone will want to buy your book, but you can get many more sales if you learn how to talk about your book with the 30-second "tell and sell."

Who will buy? Agents, publishers, booksellers, distributors, wholesalers, corporate people, meeting planners, and individuals. They don't have a lot of time. They want the meat of your book in sound bites. Your "tell and sell," like an elevator speech, must be clear, compact, compelling
and commercial.

After you have your sizzling title and know your audience and your book's general and specific benefits, you are ready to create your "tell and sell." Use these elements in it and create one or two sparkling sentences. This task may take many edits -- up to fifteen, so be patient
with the process. Brainstorm with your friends and associates to get the best mix. Judy Cullins (
judy@bookcoaching.com)

C. List your book in the Fall Announcement Issue of Foreword magazine. http://www.forewordmagazine.com/announcements.asp . Hurry, the deadline is June 8.

ParaThoughts

Be Nimble. Start immediately and write faster

It is a sad fact of book publishing life that the first book on a subject gets the most attention. The second to be published may be better but it will be difficult to place in stores that already have that subject covered.

Diane Pfeifer was cruising the aisles at the annual Memorial Day weekend BEA Book Fair. This year, she noted there were a lot of angel books and she began to think about her specialty: (parody) cookbooks. (Gone with the Grits; The Country Music Cookbook, Stand by Your Pan; The Computer Lover. s Cookbook, Quick Bytes, and more.) She continued to visit booths but kept on planning her Angel Cookbook.

On the third day of aisle cruising, her heart sank when she came upon a booth announcing an angel cookbook. Then she looked closer, the sign said, "Coming in December." Diane returned home and got right to work. Her Angel Cookbook came off the press in September. http://www.readersndex.com/imprint/000002z/00002uj/author.html

Since it takes most publishers 18 months to turn a manuscript into a book, chances are high you will be first if you publish yourself.

"There is no less wit nor less invention in applying rightly a thought one finds in a book, than being the first author of that thought." . Pierre Bayle, political scientist and author, Dictionnaire Historique et Critique.

A. Dan Poynter is criss-crossing North America to spread the word on eBooks, pBooks and The New Book Publishing Model.

Authors and publishers are discovering an innovative way to write, produce and promote their books and the new way is faster, easier and cheaper. New software accelerates typesetting, new machines automate printing and the Internet streamlines promotion. These technological improvements have spawned a fresh way to look at book publishing. The New Book Model covers all the bases and is a refreshingly innovative route for anyone with a manuscript.

Today, books are written in page-layout format instead of double-spaced courier typeface. Then the pages are converted into Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format for printing and conversion.

Just 500 books are printed using computer-driven high-speed laser printers. The softcover and hardcover books are indistinguishable from traditional ink-printed books. Prices are just slightly higher, per unit, but the quantity (and invoice) is much lower.

PDF and LIT files are generated for reading on eBook readers such as the Pocket PC.

Then finished books are sent to two or three selected agents, a few more are sent to publishers with a track records for that type of book, 3-400 are sent for review to genre-specific magazines, four or five are sent to specialized book clubs, about ten are sent to foreign publishers suggesting translation and a handful are sent to opinion molders in the author's field.

If an agent or publisher comes in with a good offer, the author sells out. If not, all the bases are covered: the book is out for review and the orders are starting to come in.

Most of the book promotion is done via email; the author. s web site replaces brochures. The media kit is replaced by a Press Room on the web site. For an example, see
/getpage.cfm?file=pressroom/pressroom.html . Avoiding printing and postage reduces promotion costs tremendously.

So, the New Book Model is a way to conserve time, inventory space and money while testing the market. More books are not printed until after they are sold. It is no longer necessary to tie up a lot of money and inventory in printed books.

More specifically:

1. The New Book Model: Writing. How to set up and build your book rather than just write it. Discover how to qualify the project, research on the Net, organize the project, draft the content and convert it into a PDF file for printing.

2. The New Book Model: Producing print and electronic editions. Typesetting, layout, book design, PDF files and POD/PQN (pBooks) printing. eBooks: Downloads, CDs and handheld readers.

3. The New Book Model: Promoting. Getting your books into bookstores, book clubs and making nontraditional sales (catalogs, premiums, fundraisers, specialty stores). Using broadcast email. Radio/TV interviews, autographings, review copies and other promotion.

ParaHumor

Here is something funny we have found on books, writing, publishing, authors and/or words. If you have a laugh to share, please send it to DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com

A. There was a writer died and went to Heaven. She asked St. Peter if she could take a peak at Hell before entering the pearly gates. St. Peter agreed and escorted the writer to Hell.

Everyone was sitting at desks covered with stacks of papers. They were continuously writing.

Then St. Peter opened the gates of Heaven. The writer looked around and realized in Heaven, as in Hell, everyone was continuously writing.

"I don't understand how Heaven is any different then Hell," said the writer.

St. Peter responded, "Hell is not much different from Earth but in Heaven, everyone gets published."
